Database Terminology
Database
A relational database is a collection of tables, consisting of related information.
Example:
The stores database, consisting of all the information needed to manage a group of 'big box' or sporting goods stores.
Table
A table is a collection of information organized in rows and columns.
Example:
The stores database consists of the customer, orders, items, stock, and manufacturer tables.
Row
A row contains all the data about one object in the table. When data entry begins, information is normally added one row at a time.
Example:
A single row in the customer table would contain all the information needed about one customer.
Column
Each column contains categories of information about the table.
When a database is created, unique names are assigned to each column.
Example:
Possible columns in the customer table :
customer number
first name
last name
company
title
street address1
street address2
city
state
zipcode
work phone
email
